When we lived in Northumberland, the return of the lapwings to our valley was the first sign that the year had turned. The days were still achingly short, the weather normally atrocious, but the sound of those birds calling as they freewheeled, plummeted and dove in the skies brought me such joy at an otherwise bleak point in the year.
I was just emerging from the fug of raising my small children when I made Lapwings. It holds a special place for me as the moment when I decided to let my printmaking take on a more central role in my life. Like the lapwings it depicts, it was a return to a world I loved.
